NAIROBI (AFP) – Tennis superstar Martina Navratilova is released from the hospital on Sunday after recovering from a high altitude pulmonary edema during his ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro charity revoked.
Navratilova, 54, led a team of 27 climbers to raise funds for the Foundation Laureus Sport for Good, when he fell ill on the fourth day of climbing Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet).
“I feel much better and really happy to be home to me. Big thank you to all the staff at the Nairobi Hospital, which is beautiful, and really care merawatku I received during my three days in the hospital. Very good,” he said .
Navratilova, who won 18 Grand Slam titles, 31 Grand Slam doubles daughter and 10 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, said he was pleased that 18 of the 27 climbers reached the summit.
They include the German Paralympic cyclist Michael Teuber and British badminton star Gail Emms Olympics.
“It’s nice to know that the team have all safely returned from my mountain. So glad to hear that so many of them successfully reached the summit despite the weather,” he said.
