LOS ANGELES – Dan Aykroyd has been practicing for the main voice in “Yogi Bear” for half a century.
Aykroyd, a killer vocal mimicked on “Saturday Night Live” including Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon and Robert Stack’s Eliot Ness of “The Untouchables,” to Yogi in childhood, when the bear smarter-than-your-average provided solace after a long school day Canadian Arctic in winter.
Chatting about his role in action-live, computer-animation combo featuring Justin Timberlake was voted best friend Boo Boo, Aykroyd recall in detail a clear dedication to the Yogi – the call letters of TV stations in Ottawa where he saw the cartoons as a child in Hull , Quebec.
Aykroyd, 58, told how at age 8 or 9, she would leave home at 7 am zipped in a snow clothing for children, walking past the Timberwolves nests, scramble for standing timber cut grease, crossing a frozen river (sometimes falling) and nation on the road in a bad environment to the school.
Then the real fun begins.
“I’ll get my books thrown around, and people will beat me. I’ll go, I’ll have to take my pants off and put them on the radiator in front of all the girls in the class because I was freezing,” Aykroyd said in an interview to promote “Yogi Bear,” which hits theaters Friday. “Then I must, at 3 pm, go and do the whole thing again and again.
“So when I got home, the dusk, the light fades at 4 Hull, Quebec, Canada, in February, March, believe me, just the warmth of Yogi Bear and my brother. I will immediately turn the TV house from school and sitting in Yogi there and watch, while my mother did not catch us my mother thought that cartoons and things like ‘The Untouchables’ are below us .. ”
“Yogi Bear” says director Eric Brevig role Aykroyd will after he came to audition and nailed feel Yogi, the big, sounds ridiculous in the 1960′s cartoon was inspired by Art Carney Ed Norton on “The Honeymooners.”
“The Yogi Bear has been doing for 40 years,” says Brevig. “And history is not completely identical. You can not hear them side by side, so you do not recognize it I do not want them to imitate characters .. I want them to be a character as you remember, especially for those who know the character of their childhood . You know, ‘There is an old friend when I was a kid. ” ”
Aykroyd, who hopes to reunite with Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis and other collaborators for the third installment in their franchise “Ghostbusters”, has had extensive film career of the players original “SNL,” which includes his comedy John Belushi, who died because of drug overdose in 1982.
“SNL” co-star Chevy Chase, with whom Aykroyd co-starred in “Spies Like Us,” “Caddyshack II” and direct disaster Aykroyd debut “Nothing But Trouble,” was a huge success at the beginning of the big screen comedy.
But Aykroyd and Belushi plays one of the “SNL” their creations to be an epic comedy with 1980′s “The Blues Brothers.”
Aykroyd went on to print a blockbuster with 1984′s “Ghostbusters”, which remains one of the top-grossing comedies ever, followed by “Ghostbusters II” in 1989. He and Ramis have written the original film to Belushi, whose role is inherited by Murray, replacing Chase when he left “SNL.”
With the sequel “Blues Brothers 2000,” his House of Blues club and travel with his brother Jim Belushi late substitute, made Aykroyd comedy spirit of the old couple living soul.
“I miss him every day, and I miss it every time I go to the House of Blues that our magnificent building. Blues palace, I mean, God, he will just love it,” said Aykroyd.
Aykroyd remains a team player, working with Eddie Murphy in “Trading Places,” Tom Hanks in “Dragnet,” Steve Martin in “Sgt. BILKO” and “co-star Jane Curtin on SNL” Coneheads “fork. He became a dramatic role in the films such as “Chaplin” and “Driving Miss Daisy,” which earned him the nomination in the supporting-actress Academy Awards.
Most players support during the last decades, Aykroyd will play second banana again to Murray if the “Ghostbusters III” got off the ground. The aim is to refresh the franchise by a member of the younger players.
“The whole idea is to hand the torch to a new generation, because we are physically weak,” said Aykroyd. “We all wheezing accident we can not lift this pack and carry around like we used to We need new blood .. We need new boots on the ground, as it were. And that’s what the new players will give us.”
Given the importance of all parties, including the wine and the brand of vodka called Crystal Head, Aykroyd is very particular about what she was looking for a job in acting.
Although he admires talented new filmmakers, he says he will not work on low budget independent film by director has not been tested. It must be established filmmakers are able to pay it.
“I will walk out the door to pay me quickly and worked with superstar If you do not. I’m not going to work as an actor,” said Aykroyd. “Sorry, I do not need. And why should not I get anything that matches what the market will bear me today? This is not the salary I used to get, and I do not care if I play a supporting part. Well I am. Fair. …
“But I’m not going to work for nothing, and I’m not going to work for those who did not know I was not. You can do it.”
While Aykroyd have to watch Yogi and “The Untouchables” behind her back as children, they could razz the time of “SNL” mimic Stack’s Ness, and now can do the same with Yogi.
“When I was doing` The Untouchables, “I said, ‘Look, Mom, you will not let me watch it, but see, see me on TV by now.’” Aykroyd said. “So finally, he just gave up, and I’ll take him, at 93, to see ‘Yogi Bear.
