LOS ANGELES (AFP) – “The Chronicles of Narnia” have been woven box office magic again, with his latest epic dethroning Disney’s “tangled” and Angelina Jolie keep Harry Potter and the old rivals at bay, the industry numbers show Sunday.
“Adventure of the Dawn Treader,” the third installment of a spiritual allegory based on the classic children’s books of CS Lewis’, obtained 24.5 million dollars in North American debut weekend, according to box office tracker exhibitor Relations Co.
All three films in the franchise “Narnia” debuted today on the first, starting with the initial rendering of “The Lion, The Witch, and the wardrobe” in December 2005.
But threequel performance was seen as a soft opening, earning less than half what’s Narnia “Prince Caspian” opened in 2008 and far below the 40 million predicted by the exhibitor relations.
Also on the debut, slipped behind the “Narnia” into second place, is a luxury thriller “The Tourist,” starring Johnny Depp with Jolie, Hollywood femme fatale key. It earned 17 million dollars.
Slipped from first to third was “disheveled,” the Disney animated fairy tale about Rapunzel Princess with long hair, which netted 14.5 million dollars.
Fourth place belongs “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One,” which earned 8.5 million dollars, bringing the global down from the penultimate film in JK Rowling’s popular series about the boy magician to 257 million dollars.
“Unstoppable,” starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine as two bold, blue-collar hero trying to avoid a collision with a runaway train full of hazardous materials, the fifth place with 3.7 million dollars in ticket sales.
“Black Swan,” a thriller starring Natalie Portman as a ballet dancer in a New York company to explore the dark side of the industry and his own sensuality, up seven floors to the sixth position. This appropriation of 3.3 million dollars from just 90 cinema, compared with more than 3,500 theaters showing “Narnia.”
Taking it off in seventh place was “burlesque.” Extravaganza of music by Cher and Christina Aguilera brought 3.2 million dollars.
Romantic comedy “Love and Other Drugs,” starring Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal, slipped to eighth, with 3.0 million dollars.
Roadtrip comedy “The date of maturity,” an eccentric travel companions featuring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis, came ninth with 2.5 million dollars.
Meanwhile, Will Ferrell’s comedy super-villain “Megamind” round of 10, netting 2.5 million dollars for a three-day stretch.
