John du Pont1 Du Pont heir convicted of murder dies in U.S. prisonNEW YORK (Reuters) – John du Pont, the heir of a rich family chemical fortune, died on Thursday at the Pennsylvania prison where he was serving a sentence for the shooting death of 1996 U.S. Olympic champion wrestler David Schultz.

Du Pont is one of the richest man accused of murder in U.S. history at the time of his conviction.

Du Pont, 72, died of natural causes in the Laurel Highlands state prison, about 70 miles from Pittsburgh, said Sue Bensinger, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Correction. He had served 13 years of his 13 – to 30-year sentence, he said.

It was a great-granddaughter-E.I. du Pont, who in 1802 founded the chemical company that bears his name and create one of the greatest wealth of American families.

At the time of the 1997 conference, John du Pont’s personal wealth is expected to reach $ 250 million.
